Manuscript Assessment


For manuscripts/projects in the first or second draft stages where you are looking for an evaluation of various mechanical, structural or story aspects. Assessments can be provided for short projects, individual chapters or full manuscripts. A manuscript assessment includes: 

 Discussions on your story concept, ideas, concerns or specific 
   requests you may have and vision for your story; 

 Full read and evaluation of your manuscript, chapter or 
   chapters; 

 Notes on any mechanical issues, including point of view, 
   passive/active writing (telling versus showing), dialogue, 
   sentence structure, etc.; 

 Notes on any story structure issues, including plot, sub-threads, 
   scene alignment, pace, details, etc.; 

 Notes on any story detail issues, including, characterization, 
   validating details, scenes, etc.; 

 5 to 15 pages of your manuscript returned with in-depth mark 
   ups, including line edits and comments in track changes and 
   which provides specific examples relating to matters mentioned 
   in the above notes; and, 

 Availability to answer questions, discuss or brainstorm on 
   various scenes and/or direction of the contracted project, 
   manuscript or individual chapters.

Manuscript Edit


For manuscripts/projects near the final stage before submission or publication where authors are looking for an in-depth screening of their work, line edits and fine-tuning. Edits can be provided for short projects, individual chapters or full manuscripts. A manuscript edit includes: 

 Discussions about your story, any concerns or specific requests 
   you may have and your goals for publication; 

• Full read and evaluation of your manuscript, chapter or 
   chapters; 

• Your manuscript returned with in-depth mark ups (line edits 
   and comments in track changes) detailing matters involving: 

           
• Mechanics—point of view, passive/active writing (telling 
              versus showing), dialogue etc.; 

           
• Story structure—plot, sub-threads, scene alignment, etc.; 

           
• Story details—characterization, validating details, scenes, 
              etc; 

           
• Grammar—punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, etc.; 

• Overview notes with guidance on areas to strengthen and other 
   topics related to the detailed edits in the returned manuscript; 
   and, 

• Availability to answer any questions, brainstorm or provide 
   further guidance on the contracted project, manuscript or 
   individual chapters.

General Information

Page 

Manuscripts: One page is industry standard calculated as being 
                            double spaced with one inch margins, Times New 
                            Roman 12 font and equalling approximately 250-
                            300 words per page. 

Documents:   One page is based on single spacing, one inch    
                            margins, and Time New Roman 12 font. 

Manuscript File 

Working from a digital file sent by email is preferable ie: Word document (.doc) or Rich Text Format (.rtf) format. I will be happy to discuss this further to make the file transfer as easy as possible. 


Track Changes 

Digital edits are done in Track Changes, mark-ups and comments entered on your actual document file. If you are not familiar with Track Changes, please refer to the Help section of your Word program for more information on how to turn them on. If you are unable to use Track Changes in your Word program, simply let me know and we will discuss an alternate process for receiving edits. 

Quotes 

Quotes are provided free of charge. 

The best way for me to give you an accurate quote is to simply talk with you. I will listen to your needs and expectations, discuss the current stage of your project and word count, hear your goals and aspirations, answer any questions or concerns you may have and decide together how best edits will work for you. When you are comfortable that we would make a good fit, I may ask to look at a few pages of your manuscript to further determine its needs and then provide you with a quote geared specifically to your project. 

Please note: if during the performance of the service I find the needs of a project extend beyond the original agreement, I reserve the right to change my fee upon discussion of the details with you. Equally, should the project take less time or edits than originally anticipated, I will be happy to reduce my fees accordingly.

Your personal information and project details are held in the strictest of confidence.

Payment 

Payment is accepted by Paypal (this includes credit card payments)—minimum ½ deposit required before work begins with the remainder to be paid before return of manuscript.

Please note: an Administration Fee of $8.00 to $15.00 will be applied to each invoice for Paypal/banking fees based on the agreed upon editing fee and payments.
